Honoré-Mercier Bridge – Assessment of the major works and acknowledgements

The Jacques Cartier and Champlain Bridges Incorporated is proud to announce that the major works carried out over the last seven weeks on the federal section of Honoré-Mercier Bridge have all been completed on schedule as planned. The Corporation also wishes to publish an assessment of this large-scale endeavour that began on June 21.

As planned, these major works took place day and night over the course of seven consecutive weeks, including during the construction holidays. On average, workers on site put in 20 hours a day over two work shifts.

During this time, the construction crews were able to replace a large portion of the deck on the federal section of Honoré Mercier Bridge near Maline Island, in the direction of the South Shore.

New prefabricated concrete deck slabs, with a lifespan of about 75 years, will provide a significant facelift to the existing deck.

A new crossover has also been built in order to facilitate managing traffic and to make it easier to set up contraflow traffic lanes during the next phases of the construction work.

A brief summary of the works:

• 193 new concrete slabs
• 15 new expansion joints
• 666 new bearing devices
• Post-tension slabs over 3 400 meters
• 3 988 m2 of waterproofing membrane
• 550 metres of paving and road markings
• New 80-meters crossover between spans 17 and 18.
• Concrete surface for the new strip: 125 m2.

More works carried out than scheduled

The steadfast pace at which the works were carried out also allowed crews to perform repair work and provide steel reinforcements to the steel structure overlooking the St. Lawrence Seaway. These works, though not originally scheduled, were able to begin thanks to the fast progress of the worksite.

The optimization of the works, all taking place during the same time, was thus more significant than initially planned.

Acknowledgements

The Corporation would like to thank the commuters for their patience during this intensive work BLITZ.

The Corporation would also like to thank its partners for their support during the construction work: the MTQ and the signage on its network and for its management of traffic hindrances, CITSO for the measures they took in order to diminish delays and ensure regular service, the AMT for the “Opus à l’essai” campaign and its coordination with the Candiac train line, along with the special measures taken by the CIT du Haut-Saint-Laurent, emergency services, the different municipalities neighbouring the worksite, the Roussillon RCM, and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake for their important collaboration.

The Corporation also wants to thank the contractor (MBC) for its hard work as well as its team who were able to carry out the work successfully and on schedule.
