A multi-user path for the Mercier Bridge

The Mercier Bridge rehabilitation project includes construction of a new 2.1 km multi-user path for cyclists and pedestrians, situated on the west side of the bridge along the Châteauguay off-ramp. This new ramp is similar to the one that has been constructed on the Jacques-Cartier Bridge .

The path will allow pedestrian and cyclist access to the bridge by the end of roadwork scheduled for 2011.

Rebuilding the train station in Kahnawake should be a high priority in multi-modal transportation planning. Many hundreds of car users from Kahnawake and Kahnawake North (LaSalle-Lachine) would prefer to take the train. During reconstruction many bicyclists would be enabled to take the train with bikes (in the last car). An old bridge like the Mercier will certainly have more repair challenges over the next couple of years.

Will the STM and related transportation officials please post signs at the blocked pedestrian and bike entrances informing users how to cross in the meantime as an alternative? My estimate is that 100 bridge crossings are made per day presently by pedestrians and cyclists and this will double and triple with proper planning and accommodation.

Hourray as well! As a cyclist it has been difficult for me to get to Kahnawake with the bike-pedestrian sidewalk being closed these last couple of months. I cross frequently and usually pass at least one pedestrian or cyclist on the way.

Hurray! This is a dream come true for me and surely countless others! Kahnawake and neighboring communities will be linked to Montreal island’s awesome bike paths. The multi-use path will make it easier to live on this part of the South Shore…now I can move back to my community! Thank you very much!
