Return of stop signs

Following discussions with all project representatives, the two stop signs at the pedestrian crossing will be put back on the detour road, which enables access to the Mercier bridge by Route 138. These stop signs allow motorists, coming from cross access roads, to use the detour road.

It is currently very difficult for motorists to move at this location. In addition, these signs slow down traffic and encourage safety in the blind curve found in this location.

We wish to thank motorists for their understanding.

We wish to inform motorists that tomorrow morning a police officer will be posted near the stop signs on the detour road joining Route 138 and Route 132, from 6:00 a.m. until 9:00 a.m., in order to remove the mandatory stop during the morning rush hour.

For more details, please read our last post.

Lose the stop sign for the morning rush and assign a controller or officer to stop and slow traffic when needed.Took me 50 mins to get to the bridge from Chateauguay this morning.

Those stop signs are really causing huge traffic backups. I waited 45 minutes just to get to the stop signs this morning. Once past those stop signs, it was moving nicely. It is not fair to the motorists who have to travel this every morning to leave them there for the odd time that someone crosses the road there. I have never yet seen anybody cross there. I think that people who live in Chateauguay have suffered enough with traffic delays. I think that the stop signs should be covered up during morning rush hours only. That would really help the traffic flow from Chateauguay. Please consider this.

You would defintaley be able to get an additional 30 cars through each green light if you just had someone to direct traffic through those stop signs during rush hour period. It absolutely created havoc this morning. When you can finally get through the light to board the bridge and look back at the Chateauguay traffic, there are scattered cars driving up to the light, because everyone is stuck in the traffic leading up to the stop signs. This morning the Chateauguay traffic was backed up before the Wolfco coming from Chateauguay. I believe it is the STOP sign that is causing these delays. The first few days of the detour there was no STOP sign and the traffic flowed very well. When the STOP sign arrived, even with not too much traffic for the past 2 holiday weeks, there was a back-up. Today, we had a 50 minute stop and start to get to the bridge–imagine when there is increased volume in the Fall! What about temporary lights there for local and pedestrian traffic? How tough can it be to set up? (…)

Although not at a complete stand still this mornings traffic was made worse by the stop signs. Please keep in mind this is vacation period and school is out. Things can and will get worse. I agree with Susan, remove the stop signs in the AM and have a signalman direct traffic if necessary.

@ Susan, dan savoie and Georges
With regard to the stop signs, we wish to ensure that traffic remains safe and secure on the detour road. We also understand the comments we have received from some of you. We are continuing to monitor traffic to ensure that it remains as safe and as free flowing as possible for motorists coming from Châteauguay. We thank you for your understanding.

I have been asking the provincial government to put a webcam on the Kahnawake/Chateauguay side of the bridge and they replied that it will be done soon. Is it possible to install a webcam right now so we can monitor the traffic on the chateauguay side of the bridge?

  9. Susan :

Why not take out the stops during the morning traffic and put them back after the traffic dies down. I am sure someone needs a job. It is crazy how slow traffic is up to that point then picks up so suddenly. The traffic does not flow properly

  10. dan savoie :

It is true that safty is first when it comes to detours, but people of chateauguay should not have to suffer long delays that the stop signs are causing, There should be someone there to direct traffic in the morning rush hours. We have suffered enough just by living in chateauguay with only one access into montreal. Make it easier for us ?????

  11. Georges :

This will slow down traffic during non-rush hour times. I thought that the goal was to prevent huge delays. Traffic is moving **slow enough** as it is.
