It’s happening under the Mercier Bridge
Even though bridge users can’t see it, the work is really moving forward on the Mercier Bridge. A number of repairs to the steelwork are being completed daily and, luckily, no lane closures are necessary.
On a site visit Monday morning, we saw the progress of the work ourselves and took a series of pictures that tell the story. The majority of the work is taking place under Ramp 3 (Chateauguay exit ramp) and in direction of the south shore on the section of the bridge spanning the river (Sector B2).
In the slide show below, you’ll notice the steel plates that have been bolted to the original steel structure. Steel frames have also been put in place to reinforce the existing structure so the deck can be replaced. The contractor has also added extensions to the cross beams of Ramp 3 in order to accommodate the multi-function path that will be added.
Toward the end of the slide show, you’ll see imposing steel shafts that will create post-tensioning on Ramp 3 by being anchored and tightened under the bridge structure. All the construction will reinforce the bridge’s structural steel in order to accommodate the new deck.
